In this course we will navigate through five units of study:
Unit 1: Decoding Culture and Identity
Unit 2: Government: Balancing Power and Freedom
Unit 3: Economies, Industry and Labor
Unit 4: Movement, Diffusion and Exchange
Unit 5: Conquest, Conflict and Cooperation
Due to the hands-on approach we will take in this course, it is imperative that you come to class daily. When absent, you will be missing more than work, you will miss an experience you simply cannot reproduce on your own. Each day we will engage in rigorous critical thinking activities and making this up outside of class will seem tedious and sometimes confusing without the context of class to help you. That being said, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and I will adapt our learning experiences for individuals that are required to be absent from class due to extended quarantine or illness.
Everyday in this class we will - Pursue Mastery, Own Our Numbers and Help Each Other Win. All assignments and assessments are critical ways that we analyze your progression towards mastery of the standards together. Owning your numbers (grades and feedback) are ways that you take ownership of your own path towards mastery. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing work will be given the opportunity to redo the assignment/test so that it represents their original work. The assignment in question may be modified to ensure fairness.
All students are encouraged to turn in assignments in a timely manner. Students will be allowed to submit an assignment up to 5 days after the due date for full credit. If the assignment is submitted after the 5-day window, the maximum grade received will be a 70/C-. In the event of a student’s absence, the 5-day window begins the first day back to school. All late assignments will be accepted until the end of the 9-week grading period for reduced credit (up to 70/C-). Unit tests should be completed in a timely manner and are not subject to a late penalty through the end of the 9-week grading period. Students are encouraged to advocate for themselves with their teacher to ensure success.
If you come to school and do not have your assignment, you will need to grab a Late/Incomplete Work Form by the classroom door or fill out the Late/Incomplete Work Form on my website/in Canvas. Fill this form out and submit it in the place of the missing assignment. Completing this step is a way you can advocate for yourself - a critical life skill for success! This form gives me insight into why the assignment is late or incomplete and allows me to provide any additional support you may need to get it completed. This form may also be shared with parents if additional assistance or support is needed throughout the course. No incomplete work is accepted and cannot be turned in for “partial credit” - you need to complete assignments so that we can accurately assess your progress towards mastery.
