Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Jennie Bryan, and I am enjoying my twelfth year of teaching high school social studies. A Tar Heel born and bred, I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a BA in History and Wake Forest University with a Masters of Education A native of southeastern North Carolina, I started my teaching career at South Brunswick High School where I taught Civics and Economics and US History. I spent four years teaching AP World History and World History in Pitt County Schools and have now returned "home" to teach AP US History. In December of 2020 I was named the 2021 Burroughs Welcome Fund Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year.

In my free time I enjoy making cameos as Uncle Sam in community parades and being entertained by my four year old daughter, Chloe. My husband and I have been known to win an occasional trivia night. As a family we enjoy spending time on the beach, taking trips to the mountains and building forts with our couch cushions.

My favorite topics to teach include the Imperialism, World Wars I and II, and civil rights movements from around the world. My style of teaching relies heavily on document analysis, student centered conversations, and using history to help students become better writers. In the classroom, my passion is challenging students to consider and analyze the complexities, continuities, and changes within our world's history. The way history is taught in today's 21st century classrooms is quite different than it was even a few a years ago when I began my teaching career. I do not see it as my job to simply teach students to memorize an ever growing list of dates, names, and battles. After all, students literally have that information at their fingertips (cell phones). Rather, my role in the classroom is to teach students how to carefully analyze evidence and critically consider the information at their fingertips to draw conclusions about larger patterns and themes that are present across time.
