What to Expect in Second Grade
Homework: Homework will be assigned each night. Usually students will have Letterland, Math, and Reading homework. Students are expected to read for 15-20 minutes each night. This is extremely important!
Reading: This year your child is going to make tremendous gains in their oral reading fluency (ORF). At the beginning of second grade students are expected to read 52 words per minute. By the end of second grade the expectation is 87-90 words per minute. Our Wit and Wisdom reading themes are Change, Westward Expansion, Injustice and the Impact food has on us.
Math: Students are expected to learn a variety of iReady strategies to solve word problems. These strategies include using number lines, and multiple strategies involving place value. We will also cover the topics of telling time, counting money, fractions, measurement, and representing/interpreting data. Students will use XtraMath to improve their fluency skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Science: Students will cover the science topics of air and weather, states of matter, sound, and animal and insect life cycles. Students will participate in hands on experiments and investigations.
Social Studies: Students will participate in several major projects this year. These projects include Celebrations Around the World, African American History, Native American History, and Geography.
Behavior: All students are expected to behave in a way that is conducive to learning. There will be no toleration for any form of bullying. JMMES is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) school. We reward positive behaviors! Students can earn Dojo points for positive behavior. These points can be used in the PBIS store.
