The purpose of the AP English Language and Composition course is to help students become skillful readers and writers of prose nonfiction. We emphasize learning how linguistic, literary, and rhetorical techniques may be used to create meaning. Students are asked to complete numerous exercises designed to help them understand how elements such as word choice, detail, rhetorical choices, and sentence structure may be used to create tone, mood, and voice. Other exercises help students master a variety of organizational and rhetorical strategies to produce clear, insightful, persuasive written work. You will learn to write analysis, argumentative, and synthesis essays. A concerted effort is made to prepare students for success in college, which includes proper documentation, ethics, and planning strategies.
