Oak Harbor High School offers a variety of art courses to fit the needs of all students. 7th grade art is offered as an elective course to 7th grade students for a semester. Art Foundations is offered to any high school student to fulfill the fine arts credit needed for graduation. Advanced 2d and 3d courses are offered to students who wish to explore, and refine, skills that were learned in Art Foundations. Graphics Design and Advertising is the newest course offered at OHHS. This course is designed for students to learn about the psychology, and subliminal cues, associated with advertising. Students learn how to navigate Photoshop and Illustrator, and create flyers, business cards, posters, product brand designs, as well as other graphics.
OHHS art students have been busy learning new techniques, materials, artists, eras, among many other aspects of art. Some favorite projects this year include ice cream value studies, subtractive soap sculptures, lego perspective drawing, clay vessels, silver solder pendants, copper enameling, digital magazine covers, and learning to write in cursive while designing illuminated manuscripts.

7th grade art is new to Oak Harbor High School this year. Students have the opportunity to learn various art media and processes. Students also explore sixteen different artists each semester. The early introduction to art is an outstanding opportunity to give future high school students a jumpstart to their art course work, and portfolio.
Oak Harbor High School students have the opportunity to enter into multiple art competitions throughout the course of the year including For the Love of Art at the Pemberville Opera House, The Focus Art Show, The Ninth Congressional District Invitational High School Art Show, AIA Young Architects Competition, among many other shows.
The 7th/8th and high school Art & Culture Clubs create many wonderful memories every year. Between weekly meetings and projects, face painting at various events, outstanding halloween parties, Christmas parties, field trips to The Toledo Museum of Art and Amish, fundraisers, community art classes, among other activities, these students have an opportunity to experience it all. The amount of talent, energy, and excitement about the art & culture club is unmeasurable.

Oak Harbor High School hosts a variety of events to raise money for different organizations including The Ottawa County Humane Society, and the OHHS Rembrandt award. Events include an ice cream social that used bowls thrown by students on the potter's wheel, an art auction with animal prints obtained by visiting the Ottawa County Humane Society, clay jewelry sales, and community clay nights.
Our art auction to benefit the Ottawa County Humane Society went great! We made $2000 to donate to this outstanding organization. Students creating amazing art pieces with the animals during their visit. They were auctioned off to community members at the event that was hosted in February. The OHHS Music Performance group performed during the pizza dinner.
The ice cream social was a wonderful event attended by many community members. Oak Harbor art students learned to throw on the potter's wheel. They created bowls that were filled with ice cream Sundays. Music was provided by the OHHS Music Performance members. Dancing was a must!
Summer art camps are always a huge success. Students in grades 1st-3rd grade fill the high school art room for an entire week of art fun. Following the final class, students invite family and friends to enjoy an art reception in the auditorium lobby, including refreshments. Each art camp has a theme that all projects are based on. These camps are educational, as well as wonderful expressions of creativity from our young community artists.
7th-12th grade art students have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of field trips throughout their art career, both during and after school. It is important to expose our students to as many different art forms as possible, in person and virtually.
Hi! I am Elly Gilbert, the art teacher at Oak Harbor High School. I have been with the district for 17 years. I attended The University of Toledo for both my bachelor's and master's degrees and am certified to teach k-12 grade. My favorite media include ceramics and metalsmithing. I also love to draw.
Students can expect to be in a laidback, judgement free environment where they are welcome to express themselves in anyway. I hope my excitement and enthusiasm about art rubs off on my students and they begin to appreciate the little things in life, because EVERYTHING is a form of art.
