Attendance Recovery starts runs from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Cost is $5.00/per class to attend and the student can use cash or check to pay. In North Carolina, state law requires all students between the ages of 7 and 16 to attend school, including high school students. While a recent state policy change prevents schools from failing students based solely on absences, it does not eliminate other significant academic and legal consequences for truancy. After 10 unexcused absences, the principal reviews the case and, if no "good faith effort" has been made by the parent to comply with the law, can notify the district attorney and the Department of Social Services. For students who are habitually absent and whose parents have made a good-faith effort to intervene, a complaint can be filed with the juvenile court, which may lead to further court action.
For classes with non-state end-of-course exams only, students in grades 9-12 may be exempt from the final exam in a semester course if one of the following criteria is met:
• a grade of “A” and no more than four (4) absences, OR
• a grade of “B” and not more than three (3) absences, OR
• a grade of “C” and not more than two (2) absences.
Attendance make-up days to NOT apply to Exam Exemptions.
