I choose to teach because good teachers can be transformational, serving as a conduit for academic or socio-emotional development that students might not achieve otherwise. I choose to teach because a welcoming, supportive, engaging classroom can serve as a safe harbor for students that are struggling to feel welcomed, supported, and/or engaged elsewhere. Selfishly, I choose to teach because students are infinitely more interesting than adults - they can make you feel frustrated, elated, deflated, and rejuvenated, often within the same class period. For all of these reasons, I choose to teach because the classroom is the best workplace I can imagine.
