High school students are promoted by attaining credits earned through successful completion of specific courses. Note that the appropriate English credit is required for promotion each year. Please also note that promotion criteria may be prorated based on the total number of credits a student had the potential to earn in a semester or year.
From Grade Promotion Criteria Credits
9- English I; two credits in the areas of mathematics, social studies, or science; and three additional credits for a total of 6 credits.
10- English II; one credit in mathematics; one credit in social studies; one credit in science; and two additional credits for a total of 12 credits.
11- English III; enrollment in courses which, if successfully accomplished, will result in the completion of graduation requirements for a total of 18 credits.
Students under the age of 16 fall under the NC Compulsory Attendance Law. When a student has missed 10 days in any course per semester, regardless if they are passing the course, there may be a student/parent meeting and potential criminal charges filed on the parent and student.
For classes with non-state end-of-course exams only, students in grades 9-12 may be exempt from the final exam in a semester course if one of the following criteria is met:
• a grade of “A” and no more than four (4) absences, OR
• a grade of “B” and not more than three (3) absences, OR
• a grade of “C” and not more than two (2) absences.
