Tate MacQueen, MFA

Welcome to my site. I am a career educator and I have been teaching at Erwin High School since 2014. The classes I teach are in the Social Studies Department and focus on American History with Civics & Economics, too.

Before I started at Erwin, I taught at Owen High School from 2008 until 2014. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I was fortunate to serve as head soccer coach for 10 years at the high school level in Buncombe County. Our teams won 157 games in that span (107 at Owen in 6 seasons and 48 at Erwin in 4 seasons) and we made the state playoffs 10 straight seasons. I also taught and coached in Henderson County and in the Washington, DC metro area before that. My career includes teaching for 2 years at the University of Delaware where I earned my MFA in photography. My undergraduate degree was in Fine Art Photography at the University of Georgia.

My wife, Bethan, and I have a son and daughter who are high school students in Buncombe County. Bethan grew up in Prince George's County, MD and her father is an Astro-Physicist and he worked for NASA on the Apollo Missions to the moon.

I grew up in Wilmington, NC and spent my high school years is Fayetteville, NC. During this time I was lucky enough to be part of 2 soccer state championships. Before being at Fayetteville Academy, I attended public school, boarding schools and private day schools. It was because of fantastic teachers and coaches that I became a teacher and coach. I have dedicated my life trying to pay forward what they instilled in me to those I serve. My goal is to teach the way I loved being taught and inspire the way I was inspired.

Please note that my students will be using Google Classroom as the hub for information, resources, assignments and assessments. Learning should be fun, interesting, challenging and rewarding because the greatest source of power is the power that comes by way of education!
