Classwork: On Monday, we will visit the library for book checkout and work through learning stations to analyze Amy Tan's short story, "Fish Cheeks." Students will examine perspective, word choice, tone, symbolism, and how to select the best text evidence.
Next, we will read Gish Jen's short story, "The White Umbrella." In this story, students will focus on analyzing character conflict, how characters change, symbolism, and text evidence.
All of these readings will lead into an upcoming writing task, where students will select two of the three short stories we have studied ("Thank You, M'am," "Fish Cheeks," and "The White Umbrella") to write a literary analysis essay.
Homework: This week's reading assignment is "Eight Ways Not to Be Spooked By Spiders." The main focus will be identifying the author's point of view. Students will also practice writing stronger reasoning in their claim-evidence-reasoning (CER) responses using a "reasoning bridge" strategy. As a reminder, homework is handed out on Monday and due on Friday.
Please reach out if you have any questions!

This is the scale I am using to help students understand using AI as a learning tool instead of using it to copy or replace their own thinking. Throughout the year I will teach AI literacy lessons to our students.
For the week of October 19:
☁️ Science Class This Week: Cloudy with a Chance of Learning! 🌧️
We are diving deeper into our new Earth Science unit on weather, and things are about to get exciting! After reviewing the water cycle and learning about relative humidity and dew point, students are ready to put their knowledge to work. Our learning goal this week is to explain how clouds form, identify different types of clouds, and describe how clouds are connected to different types of precipitation.
On Monday, we will kick things off with a hands-on lab where students will create a cloud in a jar! On Tuesday, we will explore the different types of clouds, and on Wednesday, students will build their own cloud models. Thursday, we will investigate precipitation and learn how rain, snow, sleet, and hail form. We will wrap up the week on Friday by practicing and reviewing everything we have learned.
Get ready for a week full of discovery as we connect what we know about the water cycle to the clouds and precipitation we see in the world around us! 🌦️
For the week of October 5:
Homework
Each week students will be given a homework paper on Monday. On Tuesday we will answer any questions students have in class. The homework assignment will be due on Friday. We will follow this format throughout the school year.
Homework is an important assignment, as it will have skills from previous grades as well as 7th grade concepts. It will morph as the year goes on to reflect concepts we have worked on in class.
Tutoring
Math tutoring is available each Tuesday from 3:00 - 4:00. Please email me if your child is planning to stay for tutoring.

Above: Students summarized the importance of Martin Luther and his 95 Theses for the Protestant Reformation. We "nailed" those summaries on red church doors, representative of Luther's actions at the church in Wittenberg.
Above: We "hacked" King Henry VIII's Instagram page and posted updates on his approach to the Protestant Reformation in England. Students used modern slang & hashtags to update the story.
Above: Before we created Potato Head accessories to represent key elements of the Renaissance, Protestant Reformation and the Printing Press, students designed accessories for their own personalized Potato Head.
