I have been working as a Gifted Specialist for Buncombe County Schools since 2015 and been served several elementary schools during this time. I am looking forward to my first year serving both Hominy Valley Oakley Elementary schools.
I came to North Carolina in 1990 from Voorheesville (a small village in Upstate New York). I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1987 with my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, then Clemson University with a Master's in Computer Science Information Systems in 1989. In 2008, I earned my teaching license from Mars Hill University and in 2013 my certification in Gifted Education also from Mars Hill University.
After graduating from UNC-Asheville, I spent 14 years in Computer Science including working as a programmer for the NYS Department of Transportation and then as a systems analyst for The City of Asheville. In 2008, I began my career in education for the Haywood County School System. I spent five years at Junaluska Elementary school teaching 3rd and 4th grades, then three years at Waynesville Middle serving as the AIG Specialist.
During my career in education I have been passionate in my commitment for three things: maximizing individual student performance, inspiring students’ interest in technology and instilling a sense of self-worth among all students.
I enjoy the challenge that comes with teaching a diverse group of students, and each year I like to bring new ideas and projects to my students. I feel comfortable learning right along side the kids as they always have a lot to teach me. I stress to students that learning is a process and that we all have things to work on. In our work it's not about "always being right" but rather, what did the process of learning teach us and are we better at solving problems?
I am excited for another amazing year in Buncombe County Schools!
