Chesney Gardner quickly became a tremendous athlete for Owen High School. In her first season as a Warlassie Varsity Basketball player she earned all-conference honors in Basketball. That same year she also competed in volleyball, soccer and track and field. As with this she was named the OHS Female Athlete of the Year. As a sophomore she competed in softball and was a top discuss thrower in the Western Region and was again named Female Athlete of the Year. Her junior year was nothing shy of the previous, continuing to dominate in her sports. She was named MVP for the Warlassie volleyball and basketball programs. As well as earning all conference in those two sports along with track and field. She also earned the title for MVP of the Buncombe County track meet while also placing first in the Western regionals as well as second in the state in her discuss event. She then went on to be named the 2017-2018 OHS Overall Athlete of the Year. Her senior year she began to raise the bar yet again. She set a school record of 140-foot discuss throw along with a 38-foot-7-inch shot put throw. She wrapped up her Warlassie basketball career with 1,946 point and 1,004 rebounds. Also earning the title of OHS Overall Athlete of the Year for a second year in a row while also earning the title of NCHSAA Athlete of the Year.
