Ms. Melody McGarrahan

Welcome to my BCS webpage. I have been the music specialist at Avery's Creek School for 5 years. Before coming to Buncombe County I taught for Asheville City Schools were I was awarded the honor of being named Teacher of the Year for Hall Fletcher School (2015), District winner and the National Music Educator Achievement Award by Yale University. Before moving to North Carolina I wrote and facilitated Grants for the Granby School District and was also employed as a curriculum writer/literacy facilitator for the Capital Region Education Council.

I have a keen interest in ethnomusicology and my musical travels have allowed me to record and study in depth the music of the Gullah Culture, Appalachia and the immigrant experience in California.

Music has always been my passion. Along with sharing that joy of music with my students, I have performed as the lead singer with the local Americana/folk band, "The Whole Shebang," The Asheville Choral Society, The Asheville Symphony Chorus & the light opera productions of Pirates of Penzance & The Mikado. Along with teaching, spending time with my 3 children and my furry dog, "Willie" bring me great delight.
