The School Counseling program at Weaverville Elementary School is designed to be proactive and address the personal, social, academic, and developmental needs of all students.
As a school counselor, I work with students in various settings. I engage with all students during classroom guidance lessons, focusing on friendship, bullying, conflict resolution, problem-solving, social skills, personal safety, and exploring feelings. I primarily use the Second Step Curriculum for my core counseling program. Small group counseling is an excellent way for students to build relationships and receive extra support on topics like managing feelings, friendship, study skills, family transitions, or grief. These groups are offered throughout the year as needed.
If students are struggling with a problem at home or school, they may see me individually to problem-solve and explore their feelings. For students who need ongoing counseling, I can refer them to an outside therapist or agency.
I work closely with parents and teachers to support students. If a child is struggling academically or emotionally, I can assist or find someone who can.
Students may be referred to me by teachers or parents, or they may request to see me themselves. Writing a note is a great way for students to reach out. Parents often email me or inform their child’s teacher if their child wants to chat. I can help students explore their feelings and address concerns at home or school.
At Weaverville, students will see me around school throughout the day. I start my mornings in the cafeteria, then head to Walk and Talk and News Crew. I lead Mini-Mentors, a mentoring program where 3rd and 4th graders visit 1st graders at Weaverville Primary School. I also lead a Disc Golf Club and a Mixed Sports Club. I oversee the Ambassadors program, a school job for 2nd–4th graders who serve as greeters during school-wide events.
