Hello! My name is Maggie Wheeless, and I am thrilled to be the School Counselor at Weaverville Elementary. Though I spent most of my childhood in the Atlanta area, I moved to the mountains for college. I completed both my undergraduate and graduate studies at Western Carolina University and have called Asheville home for almost 20 years.
I began my school counseling career at AC Reynolds High School in Buncombe County. Since then, I've had the pleasure of working at Edneyville Elementary in Henderson County and Isaac Dickson Elementary in Asheville City. Before joining Weaverville, I divided my time between West Buncombe Elementary and North Buncombe Elementary Schools.
When I'm not working, I love spending time outdoors camping, hiking, running, and gardening. I also love animals and enjoy sharing that interest with my students. One of my favorite things is bringing Lenny, my rabbit, to school, and I have Sugar Plum, my tree frog, in my classroom, along with a beautiful aquarium. I think having animals and nature in my classroom helps create a warm and inviting space where students can engage and connect in different ways.
Another way I incorporate what I love into my work with students is through coaching running and disc golf clubs. It gives me an opportunity to build relationships with students and families while hopefully increasing their sense of belonging within our school community.
I am passionate about getting to know students, supporting teachers, and showing up for our students in whatever ways they need. Helping students develop skills for lifelong success, building meaningful relationships, and being there for them every step of the way is what I love most about being a school counselor. I am proud to be a Blackhawk!
