James Violette

Mr. Violette

Hi!

I'm Jamie Violette and I teach social studies here at Early and Middle College. I started my teaching career in 2015 after graduating from Appalachian State with a degree in History, Social Studies Education. I have been at Early College since 2017; usually teaching classes like Civics & Economics and American History. In 2019 I earned my Master's in Educational Media (also from Appalachian). Pre-pandemic I served as one of the faculty advisors for our student government association, and now get to use that expertise to assist our Student Lighthouse team with community-building initiatives. I hold leadership roles as co-chair of our School Improvement Team and as a member of the Early College Advisory Council. I am also proud to serve as the 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year for Buncombe County Early College and as the At-Large District Representative.

I come from a long line of public educators and am also a product of North Carolina public schools. My approach to teaching and learning stems from a popular education quote: "Education isn't the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I hope to inspire students to pursue a pathway that will help them become the best versions on themselves (thanks, Ted Lasso).

I use Google Classroom to share resources and assignments with students. Most of what we do will be housed in that learning management system. Parents can be added as requested.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I'm looking forward to a great year!

My Vision

Every day I aim to cultivate and facilitate a classroom environment where students read, write, think, and engage in dialogue at a high-cognitive level as we strive to master the graduate outcomes. Mastering those graduate outcomes of being self-directed learners, effective communicators, engaged citizens, respectful collaborators, and confident thinkers will present opportunities for our students that are both greater in quantity and quality. I choose to teach here because I know that mastery will set them up for a pathway in life that can (and hopefully will) bring them happiness and success.
