Our entire district uses the Great Minds Wit and Wisdom curriculum. The Wit and Wisdom curriculum units are as follows.
Module 1 - Resilience in the Great Depression
Module 2 - A Hero’s Journey
Module 3 - Narrating the Unknown
Module 4 - Courage in Crisis
In addition to this curriculum, we practice reading skills using articles from Scope and we study Greek and Latin word stems. Stems lists are posted in the ELA Google Classroom.
Homework Information
Each week, students will receive "Weekly Work" for ELA on Mondays. Students will be given time at the beginning of each class period to work on this. Any work that cannot be completed in class should be completed as homework. Weekly work is due on Fridays.
Students should also be reading most nights. While this is not graded, this is my number 1 suggestion for how families can help their children grow in ELA. I've included a graphic at the bottom of the page that shows the incredible impact nightly reading can have on a student. Make it a part of your routine, let your children see you reading for personal benefit, and use the library so that you can cultivate an environment where there are many choices for students to find what they love to read.
It is important that create a situation that helps students to find enjoyment in this. My top tip is to provide lots of choice. Check out enough books from the public library that you can barely carry them. It is ok if your child does not touch some of them, but having the variety is important.
My second tip would be to have screen time limits. Most students would always rather be on a screen, and they are more likely to find enjoyment in reading if screens are not an option at certain times.
