I have been teaching at West Buncombe Elementary since 2007.
For the last six years, I have been lucky enough to teach SCIENTISTS in all grade levels in our incredible STEM/Literacy lab. In all grades we study a combination of life, earth and physical science. We learn with balls, bubbles, basalt, batteries and bugs. Our classes are action packed and rich with informational content. Our labs provide opportunities for us to exclaim, "Ahhhhhh! Awesomel!" or, "Look at THIS!" or, "I never knew that!" or, "Try, try, try again!" We have plenty of opportunities to learn and practice new vocabulary and write for different purposes as we work. We are gaining background knowledge that practically makes our brains explode. Mostly, we are building memories about the joy of discovering new things for ourselves and gaining confidence by experimenting together. I love working with all of our West Buncombe Elementary students.
Previously at West Buncombe Elementary I've taught second grade and kindergarten. In addition, for many year I have been a Title I lead reading specialist. Prior to that I worked at an independent school here in Asheville, and at another independent school in New York City.
I received my bachelors and masters degrees from Hunter College, The City University of New York. I have a degree as an elementary teacher and as a reading specialist for students K-12. Later in my career I studied a method for multi-sensory teaching called Orton Gillingham. This is a way to help students with dyslexia learn to read and write more easily. This study has shaped my teaching. We all learn best from a healthy combination of moving, listening, talking and observing!
