Beth Walton

I've been the counselor at Emma since 2014 and have had the privilege of watching many students grow from "just starting out" in kindergarten to taking their first steps into intermediate school.

My primary focus is on empathy, compassion, and problem solving. I help students view the world through the eyes of their friends, classmates, and loved ones. I encourage them to find their inner strength and to feel confident in who they are, but I'm always available to help them through the inevitable rough patches they encounter along the way.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or if your child could use some extra support at school.

What does a school counselor do?

  • I work with all of our students, providing whole-class instruction tied to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the American School Counseling Association's developmental guidelines for elementary students.

  • I work with small groups of students who need additional practice with executive function skills, empathy, self-regulation, or interpersonal problem solving.

  • I do short term individual counseling with students who struggle with issues like test anxiety, school adjustment, or friendship skills.

  • I help families connect with community resources for children who need more significant mental health support.

More about me

When I'm not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and baking. I bake a lot of bread, which I like to share with my family and colleagues. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. One of my dogs is a mini bernedoodle named Fidget who hopefully has a future career as a therapy dog. He's already learned to spin, and I have fun telling students that I have a four-legged fidget spinner at home.
