6th Grade Math Overview (click here to learn more)

Middle school math is an extension of mathematics learned in elementary grades. Students build on conceptual development models as they develop number sense and fluency with operations on rational numbers. Students apply properties of operations when simplifying expressions, solving equations/inequalities while exploring geometric and statistical concepts. Middle school mathematics prepares students for advanced work with algebraic concepts, functions, geometric relationships and statistical analysis in high school and beyond. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are habits that help students develop ownership of their own learning and proficiency as they engage in mathematics learning.

What does the overview above mean!!!??

  • "extension of mathematics learned in elementary grades" = Your child will continue to practice and go deeper into the work they did in earlier grades

  • "conceptual models" = hands on manipulatives or drawings that support our math work

  • "number sense" = when someone can:

          • visualize and talk comfortably about numbers

          • take numbers apart and put them back together in different ways

          • computer mentally

          • relate numbers to real-life problems by connecting them to their every day world.

  • "fluency" = a consistent, accurate, and fairly quick way to solve whole number problems

  • middle school math builds a student's knowledge to be ready for advanced maths in high school and beyond.

  • Standards for Mathematical Practices:
