Conceived by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and ACRHS is proud to take part in what we hope will become a yearly event and continue to grow. During the month of April, the organization highlights the indispensable role of poets in American culture and the importance of the literary works they create.
Each April, the organization sponsors a number of activities and nationwide events open to everyone, and they provide a calendar of happenings all over the country. You can also sign up to receive a poem a day for free. This year, ACRHS is going to sponsor several events, but you can find out more about everything offered nationally by visiting their website at the link below:

Poem in Your Pocket Day started in New York City in 1996, and after its success, the American Academy of Poets expanded it to all fifty states. Our school will join cities all around the country emphasizing the portability, immediacy, and community of poetry.
There are several ways to participate at ACRHS:
Print out a poem and keep it in your pocket. Offer to read it to anyone who will listen. If you don't want to print one out, swing by the main office or Ms. Bivins' or Mrs. Toney's room.
Swap poems with other poem pocketeers.
For the last two weeks of April, ask an English faculty member if they have a poem in their pocket. If they do, listen to/read the poem aloud and enjoy a treat from Mrs. Toney.
Have them sign your poem. Put your name on it, and be entered to win a $20 gift card. Three cards will be issued to winners.
Listen to poems on the announcements, the week of April 27th. Come tell Mrs. Toney or Ms. Bivins who wrote the poem that day and get a treat.
During the month of April, be on the lookout for poetry. Our school will become a gallery of funny, poignant, wise and entertaining poems.
Add to our gallery with your own (SFS) poems.
Explore our campus, read, and enjoy!
Every year, the Academy sponsors an opportunity for students in grades 5-12 to write a letter to one of six award-winning poets in response to watching a video of the poet reciting his or her work. Everyone will receive a general response and a certificate for participating, but the winners will receive a personalized response from the poet him or herself. Click on the link below to learn more about the program and to participate by writing your own letter to the poet of your choice. Let your English teacher know if you are doing this!
