Band Director - 6th Grade
Hello! My name is Mr. White, and I am the Band Director here at Koontz Intermediate! It is an honor and pleasure to teach your child, and I look forward to building positive relationships with each and every one of my students and their families! Teaching is my number one passion in life, and I am thrilled to return to the same school district in which I went through as a student! I am a graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, and received my bachelor's from Arizona State University. Please read below for details on band at Koontz, and please don't hesitate to reach out via email should you have any questions or concerns!! aaron.white@bcsemail.org

Meets every day, 45 minutes each day
Several concerts throughout the year
Fundraising and field trip opportunities
In band, students learn how to play a musical instrument, and also learn the basics of reading music. Students learn things more deeply in band than they do in any other class. Students are learning self-worth, self-respect, resilience, work ethic, leadership, community, and compassion. They are building relationships that will last a lifetime. Music education is crucial in child development. Students will have loads of fun with their friends, and they will also have the opportunity to go on several trips as a member of the band! We work hard and play hard!
Required Materials:
Instrument
Essential Elements for Band Book #1 (2025 Edition)
1 1/2 inch white binder w/sleeves in front and back
Pencils and paper
Manuscript paper (optional)
Communication:
Email is my primary form of communication with all band parents and families. However, TalkingPoints will also be used to give small reminders and updates throughout the school year. Students will sign up and join the Google Classroom page for their class at the beginning of the year. This will be how I communicate to students. Google Classroom will also be used to post assignments, resources, and other helpful information.
Band Member Expectations:
Each student in the band program is expected to contribute to the success of our group in a positive manner. Students are expected to take instruments home after school each day, and they should plan to practice for at least 90-100 minutes each week. It is crucial for your child's development as a musician to practice at home. Learning to play a musical instrument is no easy task, and the only way they can get better is if they have the support of their family, encouraging regular practice. The Roberson District Music Programs have a long-standing tradition of excellence!
Students are expected to come to class prepared with the required materials each and every day. Students are also expected to ask questions, and participate in class activities both individually and with their peers.
Oftentimes, band students get really discouraged at the beginning, especially if they are having a hard time learning to play their instrument, or they aren't quite grasping the information they are receiving. This is totally normal and expected! Again, learning to play an instrument is not an easy task by any means, and requires lots of patience! I like to tell my students, if it were easy, everyone would do it!! The rewards of their efforts pay off tremendously in the end!!
