GENERAL MUSIC CURRICULUM OUTLINE

***NOTE- Musical skills evolve developmentally; therefore ,this list is continuous and
accumulative from one year to the next.
Grades K and 1
Students will:
-Develop their singing voice through pitch exploration and songs
-Develop their listening, motor, and social skills through musical games
and dances
-Develop their “inner rhythm” through the use of creative movement
and melodic and percussive instruments
-Develop an appreciation for other cultures through songs and dances from
around the world
Grade 2
Students will:
-Develop their singing voices with an emphasis on good tone and accurate pitch
-Learn to read and compose rhythmic notation.
-Learn to recognize instruments of the orchestra both aurally and visually
-Develop audiation skills through the use of rhythmic and melodic patterns
-Develop an understanding of musical form through songs and rhythmic
compositions
-Develop a basic understanding of the 5 musical concepts: melody, rhythm,
form, harmony and texture
Grade 3
Students will:
-Learn to play the recorder
-Develop fine motor, reading and listening skills through solo and ensemble
playing of recorders.
Grades 4 and 5
Students will:
-Develop an understanding of our musical history including influences from Native
American, European, African, and Latin American cultures.
-Connect and reinforce the musical concepts studied thus far through the use of
composition and improvisation.
-Learn techniques for proper choral singing
-Learn basic skills, concepts and styles for African and Latin drumming
- Learn the basic techniques for playing accompaniments on ukulele.
