Purchase
If you are purchasing an instrument:
Your band directors do not recommend that you purchase an instrument yet. A quality instrument is a major investment, and routine maintenance, repairs, and adjustments -which you will need- are not typically included with a purchase.
If you decide to proceed, we strongly recommend that you purchase from Paige's Music or a local music store. The internet is flooded with low-cost/low-quality instruments that even we, as band directors, have a hard time playing! When these go out of adjustment they become impossible to play and impossible to fix -repair shops won't touch them because they can't guarantee the repair will last. The result is usually a financial loss for the parent and frustration for the child and band director.
The brands listed below for each instrument are reputable, repairable, and recommended by your directors for the purchase of either a new or used horn. Remember that your directors are here to help you with your decision, so if you are considering a brand not on the list, we ask that you reach out to us before making a purchase.
Buyer beware! Based on our many years of teaching experience, we strongly advise that you do not purchase any instrument that is offered in multiple colors; an instrument that includes gloves or screwdrivers; a clarinet with two barrels; a flute that includes any type of grease; an instrument that includes an instrument stand; or an instrument that charges extra for a case.
Also very important -your child will need several accessory items to begin playing their instrument. You can purchase everything you need in a "Starter Pack" for $45.96 (including tax) from Paige's Music. If you think you may already have some of these items, you can compare to our list below of the exact items your child will need -following the details precisely will help your child have a smooth start to band. Here is a printer-friendly copy of the list. All of these items are available from Paige's Music.

Important note: Percussionists will be learning both bells and snare drum. The bells plus the snare drum are universally called a "percussion kit." Be sure that you are ordering the percussion kit and not just a snare drum or a drum set, etc.
