School Counseling Program Overview
Currently, all elementary classes have whole-class guidance lessons twice a month. All lessons focus on character development and align with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) student standards, as well as Virginia's School Counseling standards.
More information on these standards can be found here:
https://www.schoolcounselor.org/
In addition to whole-class guidance lessons, students have the opportunity to participate in small groups where we focus on specific topics for 3-8 weeks (depending on the grade) in a smaller group setting. Some small groups include:
Girls or Boys Social and Emotional Development
Self Esteem/Confidence/Self Advocacy
Losses (divorce/separation/death/moving)
Organization
Managing Stress/Anxiety and Emotions
Making & Keeping Friends
Respecting Others
School Success
All students also have the opportunity to meet with me individually if needed. Sometimes just a quick check-in on a tough day is enough; other times, I can meet with students more regularly. If it becomes apparent that your child could benefit from more long-term or individualized counseling that I am unable to provide at school, I will contact you. If you prefer that I not meet with your student individually, please contact me to let me know. I regularly check in with our students and teachers throughout the day. Students, parents, and teachers can all make referrals for a student to meet with me in small groups or individually.
