Waverly is a Gifted and Advanced Learning or (GAL) Site. We are a school that students can choose as part of the City Schools' Middle School Choice process. As a GAL site our students participate receive content learning that includes accelerated activities and programming, including participating in district-wide initiatives such as National History Day and the Annual Science Fair. Our students in grade eight also take advanced math such as Algebra. Because we recognize the gifts and talents within all students as well, we allow all students to participate in GAL activities. You cannot truly measure another person's gifts and we believe that exposure and participation in these activities can spark and nurture advanced thinking that improves learning for all students.
The Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) uses the art of speech and debate to change lives. BUDL brings learning to life by making it relevant, real, and fun. In competitive debate and in the debate classroom students do more than just memorize and repeat facts, they own and direct their learning, they approach a topic from their own perspective, and by doing so, they find their voice, their purpose, and their power. Students in BUDL develop a thirst for knowledge and become inspired to seek and utilize new information. The Waverly Debate Team gather after school to hone their craft with their passionate coach and teammates. Each month, our debate team gather with team from across Baltimore. During this time our team test their skills at competitions, and they take their talents out into the world to make the change we want to see in our community.
