The IAFF is advocating for the support of Bill C-224, which first reached the House of Commons at the end of January, put forward by Quebec MP Sherry Romanado.
Bill C-224 is a response to the additional threat of cancers faced by firefighters who are often exposed to toxic chemicals and smoke on the job.
Fire FIghters have a higher chance of developing cancer than the general public, with particular cancers being linked to working as a firefighter.
More than 400 Canadian IAFF members have succumbed to cancers contracted due to a direct result of their duties in a 10 year period from 2012 - 2021.
Bill C-224 proposes a national standard for fire fighting and cancers, assisting with prevention, treatments, and ensuring adequate support is there if a fire fighter develops job related cancer.
