“An Opening” is a trans coming of age story full of yearning, rage, fear, dissociation, and desire. The original idea for the story came from the creators giving each other monthly testosterone shots, and wanting to document the intimate world we cohabit as two East/Southeast Asian trans people facilitating each other’s hrt. Our process was deeply spiritual, discussing our connections with our ancestors, with Kannon/Guan Yin, the transfeminine Buddhist goddess of compassion who is highly popular in both our cultures. At the same time, our process was deeply silly, and the story is packed with strange situations inspired by our conversations about work, love, and trying to navigate the trans community while being autistic and incredibly emotional people!
