LaunchPad Institute is a special program of Boston College's Office of Global Engagement that aims to prepare students for their professional careers. Increasingly, students need to go beyond their classwork to launch the early years of their professional careers successfully. They need to develop hard and soft skills, often not taught in their coursework. They need to understand how to navigate the end-to-end process of getting a job and they need to be able to speak the language of business, even if only at a basic level.
We take a fundamentally different approach to learning. Although we do provide the necessary academic foundation in business topics, that is just the beginning of how to prepare students for the real world. The training we provide is grounded in how you would learn on the job; we engage with real-world use cases and focus on the skills that are needed to make students successful professionals. On top of the training, we provide exposure to professionals in industry and we show students how to actually navigate the networking and recruiting process. Finally, the entire program is centered on a professional experience. This experience is designed around a tangible deliverable to make sure that students are learning-by-doing. In addition, this experience provides students with compelling stories to tell during later interviews and helps to build out their resume.
All of this takes place within the context of international travel. We believe that learning in a new environment, in a different country and different culture helps to underscore and heightens the learning experience. It also allows students to get to know and create deep and meaningful connections with other students interested in the same professional goals. This community building is one of our strongest points of differentiation and provides students with a powerful network as they launch into their careers.
This program is targeted at any student who is interested in learning more about business. Importantly the program is designed to accommodate both students who are majoring in business (or have completed coursework in business) and students who have no background in business. Students are provided the foundational concepts but are quickly asked to grapple with real-world applications; the learning is in doing, so everyone is able to progress and learn at their own pace.
Also, the program is designed with an awareness that most students are aiming to get a competitive internship in order to start their career. The approach and design of the program keeps this as a central focus; ultimately, LPI sets students up to be successful in the recruiting process.
Below provides some additional details on the program:
Over the course of several days, students participate in lectures and case discussions that cover the basics in financial accounting, strategy, and leadership
In Ireland, students participate in intense training modules focused on Powerpoint skills, Excel and modeling exercises, resume and interviewing skills. Along with these modules there are company visits and other cultural activities
Following the trek, students will be placed into project teams that will work together on 6-week strategic project, designed to be run like an internship. These experiences will be facilitated by LPI
The cost of the program is $4,300 and includes housing, activities, and all materials for the trek
Students will need to cover the cost of their flight to and from Ireland and should budget about $30 per day for food.
