Background
Aromatic plants of the Lamiaceae family are known for their high phenolics and flavonoids content and thus used as flavoring agents, medicines and pharmaceutical ingredients (Trivellini et al., 2016). Plant responses to salt and drought stress have much in common as in both cases low water potential is the primary problem (Munns, 2002). This research work will analyze the change in PSMs content and antioxidative capacity, if any, in response to two elicitors- drought and salinity.
Impact
The production of medicinal and aromatic plants is necessary for this period of climate change to promote health and nutritional security. So far, no specific study with a larger number of Lamiaceae species has been conducted in Bangladesh to determine the change in health beneficial phytochemical properties as influenced by salinity and drought. This project would also provide baseline information on the relative phytochemical rankings of some important Lamiaceae species that ultimately allowing researchers in the fields of human nutrition, as well as the poultry and fish feed sectors, to make use of the knowledge in the future.
