Wheel Shop

In The Wheel Shop, students use algebraic thinking to solve problems involving unknowns, equations, and simultaneous constraints. The mathematical topics that underlie this POM are variables, inverse operations, equations, equalities, inequalities, and simultaneous systems.

Level A

Primary-1st - This task challenges students to use the relationship between multiplication and division to find the number of tricycles that have a total of 18 wheels.

Level B

2nd-4th - This task challenges students to reason about a situation with two variables - seats and wheels. Students can use guess-and-check or set up simultaneous equations to solve for the number of bicycles and go-carts.

Level C

5th/6th - task challenges students to use systems of equations with 3 unknowns to find the number of bicycles, tandem bicycles, and tricycles in a shop. Students must deal with 3 different constraints – wheels, seats, and handlebars – to reason about the task.

Level D

MS - This task challenges students to analyze relationships with four variables and three equations. Students can use balance beams or equations and substitution to find the relationship between two of the variables.

Level E

7th-HS - This task challenges students to use logic in a situation that involves using rational numbers, inequalities, and a set of constraints. Students may use Venn Diagrams as a logic tool and systems of inequalities to reason out the solution.
