  • The last day of class for in-person is Thursday, June 3rd, and the last day for remote is Friday, June 4.

  • This is your LAST assignment of the year! Log into Scope magazine from Google Classroom. Find the May, 2019 issue and go to the poem, "Your World." Read it over and complete the poetry analysis exercise in Google Classroom. Come to class ready to discuss the meaning of the poem. Due: Thursday, June 3.

  • You will be doing the Poetry Project Planner & writing the poem or song in class the last day of school.

  • NO READING LOG!

  • IN-PERSON STUDENTS: PLEASE HAVE YOUR READING LOG/RESPONSE COMPLETED WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS.

  • IN-PERSON STUDENTS: Complete the vocabulary page for the play, "The Sword in the Stone." Due: Thursday, May 27.

  • Practice reading aloud your lines for the Readers' Theatre - Thursday, May 27. I have posted the cast of characters in our Google Classroom.


  • REMOTE STUDENTS: Log into Scope magazine from Google Classroom. Find the May, 2019 issue and go to the poem, "Your World." Read it over and complete the poetry analysis exercise in Google Classroom. Come to class ready to discuss the meaning of the poem. Due: Friday, May 28.

READING:

  • With this book in mind, complete the Reading Log and two responses for reading at home. If you do not have a hard copy, find the form under "Reading" in Google Classroom and print a copy. Due: Thursday/Friday May 20/21.

  • Look over the questions from Number the Stars in the "Quiz Time!" page I gave to you in class. Remote students, there is a copy of the questions in Google Classroom under the topic, Reading. Come to class this week prepared to discuss the questions about the first 4 chapters of the book.

  • Complete the "Text Structures" exercise - in-person on the hard copy or the digital version; remote students will complete it digitally. Due: Thursday/Friday, May 20/21.

WRITING:

  • WRITE A CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH FOR YOUR INFORMATIVE ESSAY. Remember the following for writing a conclusion paragraph:

Do NOT write, "The End" - You could do this in elementary school, but not any more.

"Release" the reader of your essay by wrapping up your main points - reminding your reader what the most important points of your essay are. Leave your reader with something to think about. This can be a quote, an anecdote (short story), a question - something that leaves an impression. Due: Thursday/Friday, May 20/21.

GRAMMAR:

Complete the practice exercises "Nature's Noisemakers" in the February, 2021 issue of Scope - apostrophes. If you haven't yet, watch the video Grammar Hack in the same issue.

Week of May 7 -14

  • The iReady assessments window is open from May 10 - May 28. Students should log into their Chromebooks, sign into Clever, & begin their iReady Reading Assessment. Other than technical assistance with getting started, parents should not help their students in any way during the assessment.   • Re-read or listen to the Scope magazine article, "The Lost Ship". Then complete the comprehension quiz either on the hard copy (in-person students) or in Google Classroom. Your two written responses at the end should be well-written sentences using correct punctuation, spelling and using the question words to form your answer.

WRITING:

  • Write your body paragraphs for the informative essay. You should have three distinct paragraphs about one focused topic of your thesis statement. Each paragraph should have specific examples that support your body paragraph idea. These are the "golden bricks" - see the handout I gave to you about how to provide good support for your topics.

Week of April 29 - May 7

WRITING:

  • Start writing the body paragraphs of your informative essay. Look over the Bears example essay to see how an essay is organized: Introduction with a hook and thesis statement; three body paragraphs with supporting details, examples, and a conclusion paragraph. You should have a first draft of at least one of your body paragraphs. Due: Thursday, April 29/Friday, April 30.

  • If you have already written your body paragraph topic sentences, start writing the paragraphs!

  • Start the Reading Log for reading at home. Remember: five days/20 minutes. Also, complete a response to reading in complete sentences. DUE: Thursday, March 25th/Friday, March 26.

  • Go online or use your hard copy of the March Action magazine to read the article, "Is Social Media Ruining Nature?" Then complete the 5 Questions About Social Media and Nature on p. 7. WRITING:

  • Make sure you have written a clear thesis statement and put it in the Digital Essay Outline in Google Classroom. Then, start thinking about what your body paragraphs will be based on your thesis. I will check for this on Thursday, March 25 & Friday, March 26.

  • Respond to the following writing prompt from our discussion of The Giver in your composition book: “If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways.” p. 218. Due: Thursday, March 24 & Friday, March 25.


  • Week of March 16 - 22

  • The in-person/remote schedule has started! Please make sure you are familiar with the In-Person/Remote Schedule. Our CoreLink C 6-8 class will meet in-person on Thursdays, blocks 2, 3, & 4 in Portable 3-B. We will meet remotely on Zoom Fridays, blocks 2, 3, & 4, starting at 9:05 A.M and going until 11:30 A.M. A new Zoom link will be in Google Classroom under Zoom Links.

  • New assignments will be given in class this Thursday, March 18 and on Zoom Friday, March 19. Please make up any homework/assignments you are not caught up in. I will be checking on Thursday and Friday.

  • Week of March 9-16

  • Parents/students: This is the last week of the Full Remote schedule at River HomeLink. Wow. It's been quite a year, hasn't it?

  • Complete the Thesis Statement exercises 1-9 on the first page and the three on the chart on the next page. Due: Friday, March 12.

  • Then, go onto the Digital Essay Outline in the Writing topic in Google Classroom. Look it over. Then, type in a first draft of your thesis statement - a narrowed declarative sentence that shows the purpose of your informative essay. Remember - this is a first draft - so it doesn't have to be perfect. Due: Friday, March 12.


  • Week of March 2 - 9

  • Parents - There was a survey that came to you asking you to indicate which program you would like your student to attend next school year, 2021-2022. If you haven't filled it out, please do so. Then, someone will contact you about signing up for a forecasting appointment this Thursday or Friday, March 4 & 5. If we don't have the survey, we cannot move forward with forecasting. Also, you will be learning how to cite information from an article from Action and Scope in your essay. Have a few choices ready to go by Friday, February 26.

  • VOCABULARY:

  • Complete pages 321, 322, 323, & 324 in the writing folder: revising boring hooks. Try to use as many types of hooks as you can. Don't use the same kind for every one. Due: Friday, February 19.

  • WRITING:

  • Work on the edits/revisions I suggested on your argument essay. This Friday, January 15, is the last day I will look at your essay for a final grade.

  • Find the writing folder I put in your most recent packet. We will be working in it this Friday, January 15, so please have it ready to go. It has numerous handouts and several student reference pages about an introductory paragraph, leads, (hooks) and topic sentences.

Remember to have an introductory paragraph with your thesis, three body paragraphs, and at least a couple of sentences where you write a response or counter argument to someone who has the opposite opinion, and a conclusion paragraph.   • Every student should have a hook and a thesis statement as part of an introductory paragraph for your argument essay. Now, start writing your first body paragraph, or your first reason for taking the side you are taking. Due: Tuesday, December 15.

  • The Thanksgiving Guest assignment is long overdue. Please go into the document and make sure you have followed the instructions: two paragraphs, sensory details about your meal, 5 Ws details about your Thanksgiving Guest event: Who?, What?, Where?, Why?, Where?   • PRACTICE YOUR READERS' THEATRE PARTS! If you haven't already, highlight your parts. Then, read aloud each line you have in the play. If you aren't sure of a word, ask for help or look up how to pronounce it and what it means. This is a challenging script. NO READING LOG THIS WEEK. FOCUS ON READING YOUR PLAY PARTS. You will be reading it aloud this Friday, December 4.

  • Complete the pages, "Video Discussion Questions", "Close Reading Questions" and "Critical Thinking Questions" from the play, Newsies. This is due Tuesday, December 8. Please have it done on time. You will be breaking up into Breakout Rooms to discuss the play.

  • WRITING:

  • Go to our Google Classroom and open the "Sample Essay - Electronics in School" post. Read the slideshow and the essay. Write your introductory paragraph.   • Read the story, " The Rise of Roblox" in the October/November issue of : Storyworks magazine . This is for fun. There is also an article that is paired with it called, "A Sweet Treat in a Tough Time" about the history of Candy Land, one of America's most popular board games.

  • WRITING:

  • Write your hook for your argument essay, due Friday, November 20. You can write it on either of the Classroom essay documents. Come to class Friday, November 20 ready to share your hook and thesis statement.


  • SPELLING/GRAMMAR: In your new November issue of Scope, find the article, "Voting in the Wild" on pages 2 & 3. Read it carefully and complete the exercise right in the magazine, using pen. Then, in your new packet find the pages, Commonly Confused Words GRAMMAR: "VOTING IN THE WILD". Read over pp. 1 & 2 and complete p. 3. Due: Tuesday, November 24th.

  • Week of November 3-10

  • Start the Weekly Log For Reading At Home (blue log sheet). Due: Tuesday, November 10. Some of you are not completing the response to reading assignment - the back of the log. This part isn't optional, so make it a part of your weekly plan. Remember, choose only two questions and use a separate piece of paper. I would like to see 100% of the class complete the response part next time.

  • In the October issue of Action magazine, read the article, "Making Life a Little Sweeter." Then do the page "Sequence of Events" that goes with this article. Due Tuesday, November 10.

  • Complete the worksheet, "Vary Your Sentences." Look for the paragraph that begins with, "My brother Don and I made pizza..." Be sure to read the four ways to add to your sentences.
