We will be continuing the iReady reading diagnostic next week in class. If you can, please remind students to bring plug-in headphones (we have some in class but not enough for each student).
In an effort to support my families who must remain at home for a while, here is some additional information regarding what we’ll be working on for the next couple of weeks. It is important that you remain engaged in this content to the best of your abilities at home so that your child doesn’t fall too far behind in class. I suggest prioritizing the writing detailed below and continuing on with the at-home workbooks. Please ensure that your child is reading at-level texts for at least 20 minutes each day at home.
Social Studies: We will be learning about animal adaptations, Australia, and Aborigines next week, Africa the following week, and Antarctica the next. I suggest that you answer the questions linked in these slides with your child (this is a great opportunity to teach them how to research). These slides should update over the next few weeks as I add more to them. You can check my website weekly (linked above) to find more in-depth information about what we’ve been doing in class.
Writing: We'll be making our graphic organizers outlining our personal narratives starting tomorrow / next week (depending on how fast students finish iReady). Students will take the event they chose to write about and break it into a beginning, middle, and end, with three key details for each. My expectation for fourth graders is that they will write three paragraphs with 5-6 sentences in each. For their final draft, I expect them to write in pen (for professionalism) with correct capitalization and ending punctuation and few spelling errors.
We have been taking the iReady reading diagnostic in class. If you are able to, please have your child take this (or the IXL reading diagnostic) at home so that I have some actionable data helping me to see where my students are at academically. Remember that they cannot receive help with the questions if we are to collect the most authentic results.
To get to the iReady, students can sign into their chromebooks, click on the BGPS bookmarks folder in the upper right or left corner of the chrome browser, scroll down to Clever, and then scroll down to iReady. There will be an “inform reading” option that pops up (it might be a bit glitchy—be patient with it :)). That’s what students will need to click.
Reading: We read chapter one of Stuart Little this week. Next week we will read chapter 2, the following week chapter 3, etc. We’ll be answering questions about setting, characters, and comprehension.
Art: We will be doing artwork pertaining to the social studies lessons, practicing drawing animals with shapes, and hopefully returning to the heraldry assignment we’d started.
