1. Brief description and aims of module:

The module will introduce you to the fundamental compositional techniques and technological processes that have informed music creation in a broad range of contemporary idioms. The emphasis is on widening your imaginative scope as a composer by providing an overview of the materials and techniques available to you. Techniques and processes will be introduced using general models from both the work of contemporary composers and more historical repertoire. This module introduces you to the use of music technology.

Aims

• To provide you with a knowledge of fundamental compositional techniques, resources and materials.
• To provide you with a knowledge of music technology software and hardware and their creative usage in composing.
• To equip you with a knowledge of writing for software instruments and samples and audio production skills to present your work comprehensively.

2. Outline Syllabus:

Sessions in creative practice and music technology will introduce fundamental compositional techniques and resources, designed to expand your imaginative scope as a composer. You will explore core compositional techniques in basic musical parameters, as well as develop your notation skills to professional standards. Music technology sessions will enable you to have access to music workstations on an individual basis. The sessions will divide between lecture-based and workshop-based practical sessions. Lecture sessions will develop your contextual and theoretical knowledge, whereas the workshop sessions will typically involve you in a guided and sequential exploration of defined areas of skill. These sessions will be supported by tutorials in which you can discuss your work individually.

3. Teaching and learning activities:

Lecture/workshops in composition skills and theory together with lecture/workshops in music technology.
