1. Brief description and aims of module:
This module continues to develop your performance skills on a principal instrument/voice. There is the opportunity for you to take lessons on an additional instrument/voice as a joint first study. You will continue to develop musicianship skills including aural, sol fa, ensemble, score-reading, improvisation and directing skills and you continue to relate aural and stylistic awareness to performance in order to develop the critical and analytical skills required for effectively critiquing performance. The module continues to address issues of performance practice and repertoire related to your instrument/voice as well as introducing ideas and concepts concerning performance today including music and technology, music in everyday life, performance as an industry in the 21st century, music in the community, music and wellbeing, performance anxiety.
The module aims to:
Extend your expertise in general musicianship
Continue work towards technical assurance on your instrument/voice
Continue to work successfully in large ensemble/choir rehearsals and public performances
Extend further your knowledge of repertoire and performance practice on your instrument/voice
Explore issues in performance today
2. Outline syllabus:
You will have individual tuition on your first study and the option to study an additional instrument/voice as part of a joint first study. Weekly performance workshops continue to develop performance-related skills to an intermediate level including sight-reading, score-reading, ensemble playing, conducting, ensemble directing, improvisation and memorising. You will also continue to explore issues relating to repertoire and performance practice together with ideas and concepts concerning performance today in a weekly lecture. Alongside the development of individual instrumental/vocal skills, you will continue to gain experience in the preparation of concert performances through weekly ensemble rehearsals, and self-confidence, self-awareness and communication through formative assessment in weekly workshops. The workshops will also continue to develop more advanced skills in musicianship.

A weekly two-hour workshop - musicianship and performance skills
A weekly one-hour lecture - Repertoire, performance practice and issues in contemporary performance
