1. Brief description and aims of module:
On this module, we will introduce and examine sociological, theoretical and philosophical issues relating to the popular music industry through readings, discussions, and presentations. In so doing, we will explore rhetoric and debate technique. Throughout this process, you will develop a fluency in the principal academic and theoretical issues surrounding commercial music, as well as the research and presentation skills necessary to introduce and discuss them in their own voices and contexts.
You will develop a fluency and focus in the kind of thinking and rhetoric that will remain integral throughout their academic and professional lives.
2.Outline syllabus
Section one: The first weeks of the course will be dedicated to examining and understanding relevant and contemporary issues through lectures, discussion and group work. Example: Week 1 Gender and LBGT Issues, Week 2 Music, the internet and copyright, etc.
Section two: The second section will focus on elements of persuasion, rhetoric and debate technique through lectures, discussion and group work.
Section three: the final weeks will be given over to student-led debates on relevant issues of their choosing. This will be assessed.
