1.Brief description of module
This module is the first module of the introductory programme to painting and drawing.
The module aims to develop your ability to engage with methods and materials associated with the production of painting and drawings.
By introducing you to practical research skills we aim to develop your ability to contextualise your practice.
The module aims to begin to develop your awareness of the range of opportunities available to facilitate your professional development as creative practitioner.
2.Outline syllabus
A weekly programme of practical taught studio introductions and technical workshops, will introduce you to materials and methods used in the disciplines of contemporary painting and drawing.
Through a series of short projects you will begin to develop a personal portfolio of paintings and drawings.
A programme of staff lectures focusing on their practice and research will begin to introduce you to ways in which research facilitates and contextualises practice.
Introductions to the library and the university’s virtual learning environment will provide access to teaching and learning resources.
Through practical photographic and digital workshops you will be introduced to ways of documenting your work for professional purposes.
A varied field of art programme of professional practice seminars and talks by visiting lecturers and careers staff will introduce you to:
Means of disseminating your work.
Ethical and sustainable considerations relating to practice.
Professional opportunities available to enhance your employability.
You will be informed and instructed in safe working practices and will work within the university’s health and safety regulations.
3.Teaching and learning activities
During the module, you will engage in the following activities:

One to one tutorials, group seminars and peer group critiques
Individual tutorials that support regular reflective evaluation of personal ambition and progress

A range of tasks, learning materials and research guides will be published on Minerva to support the module.
