Bath FBC is striving to continue the mission established by our church founders more than 125 years ago. That mission includes standing strong on the infallible and inerrant Word of God as the truth that leads all people into a right relationship with God, through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Bath FBC is made up of a group of remarkable people who continue to love God and who strive to make Jesus famous in our community and our world. Each of us seek to approach life with a Christ-like attitude and a love for each other and our neighbors. Together, we make up the church that Christ has commissioned to go into our community and world to further his Kingdom. Though none of us are perfect, we are striving daily to be what Christ would have us to be so that others may be reached for Him. We are an EMPOWERED people, empowered by the living Spirit of Christ, set upon a mission to reach our community for His glory. An EMPOWERED people are those who Embrace the Word of God, Model holiness, Pray constantly, Offer cheerfully, Worship daily, Evangelize their world, Reach out to one another, Exercise their spiritual gifts, and are Devoted to the church. Jesus Christ has made the difference in our lives, and it is for Him that we commit ourselves to be the Church He envisioned from the other side of the cross.
OUR STAFF
Pastor Herb Sons and his wife Kathy
My wife Kathy, our four children, and I were blessed to begin our ministry at Bath FBC in October 1997. Fresh out of seminary and facing our first ministry as “the pastor’s family” was a very daunting and somewhat intimidating responsibility for this Yankee from up north. Born (1956) and raised in Felicity, Ohio, near the banks of the Ohio River, I never dreamed that the Lord would some day lead me to this small village of Bath, SC in “the Valley.” It has been a true blessing to have now pastored here, at the time of this writing, 26 ½ years. I am a 1978 graduate of Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY, with a B.A. in English, and a 1997 graduate of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, with a Master of Divinity w/Languages degree. My wife Kathy is a 1983 graduate of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY and the two of us have been married 41 years. The Lord has blessed us with four children, David, Mollie, Peter, and Anna, and at the time of this writing, 12 grandchildren (1 deceased) and a 13th on the way. (This is an ever-changing situation).
My goal as Pastor has always been to try to remember that this is the Lord’s church, and what He has given me to do as overseer is to teach people the full measure of God’s Word, without apology; to make sure that its people are discipled and equipped to be ministers themselves; to love and care for even the least of these; and to lead the church in seeing the urgency of reaching our lost community with the Gospel so that many can be saved. From the very first days that the Lord led me to BFBC, my continual prayer has been the words of Solomon, when he inherited the throne of Israel: “Now, Lord my God, you have made Your servant (to lead these, Your people). But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people You have chosen . . . So, give Your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3:7-9)
