“RETHINKING GALDÓS STUDIES”

I SYMPOSIUM OF THE ASOCIACIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE GALDOSISTAS

September 14-15, 2018

Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, USA

Co-sponsored by the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures, Bowdoin College, the Department of Spanish, Bates College and the Asociación Internacional de Galdosistas, Inc.

The first symposium of the Asociación Internacional de Galdosistas seeks to make a significant intervention into the critical narratives that shape contemporary understandings of the literature of Benito Pérez Galdós, his world and his legacy. Informed by the latest developments in criticism and theory, the symposium will be a forum to discuss the ways in which the work of Spain’s most prolific and significant realist writer of late-nineteenth century revitalizes our knowledge of and engagement with the period, even as it illuminates our own. Panelists will examine the possibilities offered by new methods, unexplored contexts and neglected texts to re-map the literary-cultural landscape of Galdós studies and rigorously re-imagine its parameters. To this end, the symposium organizers invite paper proposals that will contribute to or ignite debate on any aspect of Galdós’s writings and their context.
