Laura's life goal is to empower people to take the driver's seat in their own health, while working beside them to provide guidance and expertise along the journey. She is currently dual-enrolled in BUC and PCHS to receive her doctorates in Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine, in order to offer her patients a wide variety of options to achieve optimal health.
Laura was drawn to naturopathic medicine because she found so many dead ends in her own personal health journey. It wasn't until she came across an ND who quickly found the root cause and was able to resolve the problem. Soon after, Laura obtained a position in a Functional Neurologist's office, where she witnessed the doctors incorporating the patient into their own treatment plan while utilizing various modalities to achieve health. It was then she saw the most profound improvement and knew she needed to pursue this medicine.
Vice-President
My name is Alessandro Porcella and I am the Vice President of the What’s Next Club. Naturopathic Medicine has always been a part of my life in one form or another as I grew up in a household where some traditional remedies had been passed down to my parents. Now in my second year at Bastyr, I wish to see Naturopathic Medicine become more of a household name again and I believe this starts by having us as Naturopathic Medical Students be better trained and well versed for when we graduate. For me personally I want to work in an integrative setting where different medical professionals work together for the optimal health of the patient. This is why the What’s Next Club matters to me so much because we strive to prepare all students for what’s next in their careers and their growth.
Treasurer
Alexis was drawn to naturopathic medicine because of the core principles of finding the root cause and treating the whole person, which strongly resonate with her. She was previously a chef and loves incorporating the medicinal and healing properties of food into all meals. She dreams of working alongside other practitioners in an integrative setting and possibly having her own practice own day.
Historian
Sarah was drawn to naturopathic medicine because of the focus on lifestyle medicine. It never made sense to her to rush right to pills when one could try modifying diet, stressors, and sleep habits. Her background in healthcare management and as a yoga teacher have greatly influenced her view of health and healing. Sarah hopes to go into family medicine and to incorporate vitalism, homeopathy, and yoga therapy into her practice.
VP of Communications
After working as an Intraoperative Neurophysiologist for two years where the shifts were long and the call schedule was brutal, I couldn't see myself going to MD school. I wanted to practice what I preached...and I wanted to preach natural ways of healing, I wanted to educate my patients, I wanted to spend hours with my patients, I wanted to open a wellness clinic. Soon enough, I stumbled upon Naturopathic Medicine and instantly knew this was the field that I had been searching for.
I'm currently dual-enrolled at BUC and PCHS for my doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. After graduating from BUC I plan on completing a 1 year residency as I finish my DACM, then I am going to open an integrative wellness clinic.
What's Next is a question I am always asking myself. I'm a big fan of efficiency and learning from those who have already gone through what I am going through. Through What's Next Club everyone has an opportunity to learn from elders and proceed with increased insight and wisdom.
