Why we developed this toolkit
Homelessness is fast on the rise across the UK. In London alone, nearly one in 50 people are now homeless and living in temporary accommodation.
This homelessness crisis is fast becoming unsustainable. For one local authority we worked with, the number of people presenting as homeless has doubled just in the last two months.
Part of the frustration for many councils is the fact that much of what is driving the UK’s housing crisis falls outside their control.
Despite this, there are still tangible improvements that are within a council’s sphere of influence. We have worked recently with seven different councils on homelessness. Based on this, we have brought together proven ways these services have made rapid improvements and how they did it.
We offer this as a toolkit, knowing that the situation is urgent and we hope the content here is helpful for those who are also wrestling with this immense challenge.
The resources are divided into two sections:
Of course, our recommendations are far from exhaustive nor perfect. As such, we want to make this toolkit as collaborative as possible. If you have thoughts and ideas to contribute or would simply like to connect with us, please email Dennis Vergne at dennis.vergne@basis.co.uk.
