ABOUT ME

Hi everyone and welcome to my website!

My name is Karla Erdman, and I'm an English teacher in the Bethlehem Area School District, specifically I teach at Freedom High School and have been teaching there since 2007.

I have earned a masters degree from Wilkes University, a bachelors degree from Moravian College, and an associates degree from Northampton Community College. I also earned a Specialist Certificate: Teaching Writing and Literacy from Penn State. Recently, I earned the Online Teaching Instructional Endorsement through ESU. In addition to teaching English classes, I also teach journalism and SAT preparation at Penn State University Lehigh Valley.

Currently, I am enrolled in the Creative Writing MFA Program at Wilkes University. The goal is to learn more about the craft surrounding creative writing in general, as well as focus on fiction and poetry.

I am heavily involved with integrating 21st century skills into my classes. In 2014, I received the S.T.A.R. Award from IU20. In 2016, I was recognized as a local PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator. [Note: see page 21.]

I am also proud to say that I am the adviser for The Freedom Forum, FHS's school newspaper. In fact, I was a honored participant of the 2011 ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institute. The fellowship, located at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication site in Phoenix, is an intensive two-week program that provides teachers with the core values of journalism.

In addition to teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband, Don, and I have been married since 1989. We have a daughter, Karanda, who is a graduate of Penn State University Park and DeSales University. She is a nurse at a local hospital's emergency room. Our son, Joshua, is a graduate of Liberty High School and currently is a paramedic in Harrisburg. He is getting married in July 2019. We also have a Golden Retriever, Francis (Frankie) that is a certified therapy dog.

One thing I like to do is travel with my family. My daughter studied abroad at the University of Sussex in England during the summer of 2010, and she completed a 15-day research trip in China in May 2011. My husband and I were fortunate to be able to afford to visit her while she was in England. Additionally, my husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in 2014 with a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.
