WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT?

Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college-level or occasionally vocational/technical courses while still enrolled in high school. Students can experience college-level academics, potentially saving time and money by completing college credits early. It also provides a smoother transition from high school to college by familiarizing students with the rigor and expectations of higher education. Our dual enrollment program is offered in partnership with local colleges or universities, and students may have the opportunity to take classes on campus or online, depending on the program's structure.

NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE is one of our primary community partners in this endeavor. Other opportunities may be available depending on student eligibility requirements and prerequisites.

(A small number of college-level courses are available for dual-credit. These courses require additional pre-approval before earning both high school and college credit simultaneously.)

Dual Enrollment Cohorts are available by invitation only to specific students for no-cost courses and/or pathway-related course topics, with GPA and other eligibility requirements applying.

High School Honors Scholars opportunities are designed to provide academically motivated and high-achieving students with an enriched educational experience at the college level. These programs are competitive and students must apply for acceptance. Taking part in these programs can enhance college readiness, boost academic credentials, and provide students with a competitive edge when applying to colleges and universities.

HOW DO I DUAL ENROLL?

The process to dual enroll typically involves the following steps:

1. **Research**: Research what’s available by talking to your school counselor, attending an info session, and/or keeping an eye on the email marketing from the LHS Guidance Department.

2. **Apply**: Complete the application process for the dual enrollment program, which may involve submitting an application form, transcripts, and other required documents. Get a copy of the DE checklist to help you through the process. Get a copy of the FERPA form and any other required paperwork from your SSC.

3. **Approval**: Await approval from the college or university offering the dual enrollment program. Keep an eye on your email!

4. **Orientation**: Once approved, sign up for orientation if required, which includes info on how to navigate college life, pay your bill, show up to your first class, etc.

5. **Register**: Once approved, register for the desired courses within the dual enrollment program with help from their specialists.

6. **Attend Classes**: Attend classes at both your high school and the college or university as scheduled. Be proactive in managing your schedule and communicating with instructors and advisors as needed.

7. **Complete Coursework**: Fulfill the requirements of the dual enrollment courses, including attending lectures, completing assignments, and taking exams, to earn college credit while still in high school.

8. **Transfer Credits**: After successfully completing the dual enrollment courses, ensure that your college credits are transferred to your desired post-secondary institution, if applicable. This may involve requesting official transcripts from the college or university offering the dual enrollment program.

9. **Evaluate Progress**: Periodically assess your progress and adjust your academic plan as needed to ensure that you are meeting your goals and maximizing the benefits of dual enrollment.
