BASD utilized their model of having all students read by the third grade. This goal is being accomplished through the use of the Wonders Literacy program. All students receive daily instruction in both small and whole group settings. During whole group instruction, students will work on their comprehension skills, grammar, and phonics. During small group instruction, students will work more closely on developing on areas in which they might struggle or could use more practice. Some of the comprehension skills studies include the following: summarizing, authors point of view, sequence, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and fact/opinion. All resources are accessible online for students and parents through the Clever site. Students will click on the button that says "McGraw Hill."
BASD utilizes the Pearson Envision Math program. This program is aligned to the common core standards set forth for all fifth graders. This program is divided into topics that allow for students to create a stepping stone of learning as each lesson progresses off the previous lessons from the book. This book is consumable and will come home with students each night. This program contains games and online components that students can access outside of the classroom to reinforce their skills.
In addition, BASD uses the First in Math program. This is a game based program that reinforces math skills through students playing games and learning strategies instead of just memorizing facts. Students should be using this site daily for 20 minutes each day to strengthen their foundation math skills.
In fifth grade, the Science curriculum is taught during two out of the four quarters of the school year. During those quarters, we will focus on Matter and Renewable/Nonrenewable resources.
In fifth grade, our Social Studies curriculum is taught two out of the four quarters of the school year. During these quarters, we will focus on the creation on the Constitution, States and Capitals, Jamestown, and Plymouth.
In recent years, BASD has focused on taking time out of the school week, to help students with their social and emotion needs. To help foster a well-rounded citizen, we are using the Leader in Me model that focuses on 7 Habits that help people be successful. These habits include:
Be Proactive
Begin with the End in Mind
Put First Things First
Think Win-Win
Seek First to Understand then to be Understood
Synergize
Sharpen the Saw!
