Course Description
This course is designed to build upon the knowledge and content of Film Music, giving students a deeper understanding of different film genres and styles of music used in film. We will also be taking a deeper look into movie sound design and editing within different genres of film and how the music fits into the overall soundtrack, examining how different composers work within similar genres or how the same composer uses the musical score with different directors.
Class Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Recognize techniques of film and associated terminology;
Recognize cultural codes of film music;
Recognize the history of filmmaking beyond Hollywood (historical eras, film genres);
Recognize as well as interpret the principles and functions of film music;
Identify selected films, directors, composers;
Identify, interpret, and transcribe important musical motives and themes;
Analyze and interpret the role of music in a given scene, and ultimately in a given film;
Synthesize above information in creating a short film.
Class Content:
Review of film terminology
Review of music theory, notation and terminology
Viewing, comparing, and interpreting films of the same genre, and films of different genres or directors with music composed by the same composer between two films to analyze style differences.
Viewing non-Western films and comparing differences in compositional and filming techniques to those same styles of Western films
Working in a group to complete a short film project with a musical score
