Our goal in 6th grade is to introduce the basics of technology, engineering, manufacturing, and design so students are equipped with the background knowledge to continue in PLTW in 7th grade. I also want students to be able to take what they learn about problem solving and design and be able to apply it outside of my classroom.
Students will be introduced to the Engineering Design Process and use it to complete different projects in class as well as using it to solve problems. The students will complete a project that demonstrates their understanding of how to use the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem. View the project description and rubric here, Solving World Problems.
Our goal in 7th grade is to use what we learned in 6th grade and add on to it as we go through out our 7th grade year. We will build on the technology, engineering, manufacturing, and design that was introduced in 6th grade. Students will get to do more advanced and in depth projects due to their prior background knowledge gained from 6th grade. Students will use CAD programs for many projects in this class.
CAD is used widely throughout many different careers. Students will put their problem solving skills to work by designing a puzzle cube and modeling it on Fusion 360. Students will also use the engineering design process to research and build mousetrap cars.
Before our middle school students head off to the high school world, we want to let them continue to dive deeper into the area of Technology Education and everything it has to offer. We highly focus on Woodworking in 8th grade. We work on more advanced wood working projects and even design some of our projects to build.
