WE DID IT!
After lots of hard work, discovery, and reflecting HCES became STEM District Certified in November 2022.
We began our STEM journey with our first walk on November 19, 2021. We focused on the 4 C's in STEM: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Teachers attended professional learning about the 5 E's of science lessons (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate) with guest presenter from Georgia Highlands College, Sharryse Henderson. We designed our EDP (Engineering Design Process) poster that simulates the state design process.
Our second STEM walk toward district certification was held on March 30, 2022. The focus of this walk was to see evidence of our ongoing STEM walk, connections to careers for students, and a stronger integration of math. We are continuing to work on including more outdoor lessons and purposeful STEM journaling.
October 21, 2022 encompassed our third district level STEM Walk toward certification. We received great feedback on student engagement throughout the building and a strong community feel. Timelines were great artifacts from previous lessons taught. Lessons demonstrated rigor and authenticity. We will continue to work on improving our use of journals and adding more diversity within our lessons and speakers/professions.
November 2022 - District Level STEM Certification was obtained
We now hold two STEM Showcase events each year and introduced an evening Community STEM Showcase in 2023 for parents and community members to attend. The community showcase is led by student ambassadors from each grade level.
Student STEM ambassadors showcased their recent projects during our community STEM event. There were so many Science connections represented…recycled plastic projects, habitats, electric circuit city blocks, states of matter crayons, ecosystems, forces of motion, all things fall, and information on our school garden, Hamelot.
