From Mr Craig Thomas, Headteacher
Welcome to 'The Bartholomew Bulletin', a round up and reflection of the news and highlights from this term. I hope that reading this newsletter gives you a flavour of life at the School. I am sure you will join me in feeling proud to celebrate all the activities and events that have taken place.
It has been a busy extracurricular term including the MFL trip to Cologne I've been delighted to hear from Mr Scott that our German students have had an unforgettable week in Germany, returning full of stories, confidence and cultural experiences that have brought their language learning to life. Our A Level Geography students had a fantastic, hard-working week on the Gower peninsular, collecting data for the NEA aspect of their course. As ever, our students were excellent ambassadors of the school. A huge thank you to the staff team for leading such inspiring and well-organised trips.
In Term 2 our Year 11 students will complete their mock examinations. The excellent attendance at this week's Success Fayre shows that they are ready for the challenge and we wish them all the best of luck in their preparations.
I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and support and hope that you all enjoy a well-deserved rest in the break.
We look forward to seeing staff and students back in school on Tuesday 4th November.
From Dr Lucy Dickinson, Chair of Governors
A warm welcome to all our new students and families, both those who have started in Years 7 or 12, as well as individuals joining other years. Governors have met twice this term, our September meeting focusing on the outcomes from the Year 13 and Year 11 students who sat their GCSEs and A Levels in the summer. Outcomes were once again impressive, giving all students access to interesting pathways, whether at universities or colleges, or moving into apprenticeships and work. Good exam results are the result of hard work, and we appreciate all the efforts of staff as well as the support of parents and carers. Congratulations and best of luck to those who have moved into the Sixth Form and students who have now left the school.
Earlier this week Governors met to look at the newly refurbished Sixth Form and Careers Centre – given the growing popularity of the Sixth Form we are fortunate to this additional building, including an outdoor area, which will offer students more space to study and socialise together. We also heard about the continuing enhancement of careers provision for all year groups including the involvement of parents and the community in events such as the recent Careers Detective session for Year 8s and the work experience opportunities for older year groups.
In addition to regular meetings, Governors have been visiting school to get a sense of the range of activities and subjects on offer. The Year 13 students presented their EPQ work in a fascinating variety of topics, and Governors have also been out and about at the Year 6 Open Evening and Year 11 Success Fayre. Alongside the strong academic performance, the school continues to offer a range of sporting and other extracurricular activities, with cohorts starting their Duke of Edinburgh journeys and our newest Year 7 students braving the stage in an evening of musical performances. Do encourage your children to get involved in clubs and trips, and remember that if there are financial constraints to participation, the school is always looking to support as many young people as possible to take part.
Three Governors have left the Governing Body – our thanks to Jo Feehily, Jean Blackstock and Nicole Evans for their time and efforts on behalf of the school community. Parents should have received our recent letter regarding Parent Governor vacancies – this is an interesting and rewarding opportunity to be involved in the future development of the school. If you have any questions about the role, do get in touch.
From Mr Scott, MFL Department
Our GCSE and A Level German students have returned from a wonderful week in Cologne, filled with language learning, cultural discovery and a huge amount of fun.
After an early start, the journey went smoothly — even the ferry crossing was described as plain sailing! The group arrived ahead of schedule, settling into their hostel and immediately making new friends with a visiting German school group. It was fantastic to hear so many of our students confidently using their German in conversation from day one.
The following days were packed with experiences that brought classroom learning to life. There was an early-morning jog through the Hiroshima–Nagasaki Peace Park for some of our keen runners, followed by a scenic Rhine river cruise, where students enjoyed views of Cologne’s famous skyline. A guided tour of the Olympic and Sport Museum saw them recreating world records in long jump and weightlifting and even playing football on the rooftop pitches overlooking the river.
A visit to the Chocolate Museum provided both cultural insight and delicious treats, while an impromptu stop at the historic Großer Martinskirche and a stroll through the city centre offered more chances to practise their German with locals. Students also enjoyed a creative language-through-art workshop at the Ludwig Museum, showing great focus and flair, and worked together to climb all 533 steps to the top of Cologne Cathedral for breathtaking views across the city.
One of the highlights of the trip was the behind-the-scenes tour of the Bayer Leverkusen Stadium (the Bay Arena), where students sat in the dugouts, held a press conference in the media centre and walked through the changing rooms once used by European football legends. The stadium guide even commented that Bartholomew’s group was one of the best he could remember — high praise indeed!
Evenings were filled with friendship and laughter — from table football and card games in the hostel, to a riverside meal of traditional schnitzels and a final night of pizza and ten-pin bowling, where students (and staff!) got to test their skills. Congratulations to Mr Lloyd, who narrowly won the staff bowling competition!
On the final morning, a handful of energetic students joined Ms Selfe and Mr Scott for one last jog before the journey home. The group made excellent time, fitting in a picnic lunch in Belgium, a Cologne trivia quiz, and even a quick stop at a French hypermarché in Dunkirk — putting their French to use as well as their German — before catching an earlier ferry than planned.
The trip was a tremendous success from start to finish. Our students embraced every opportunity, represented the school superbly, and returned home tired but full of wonderful memories and new confidence in their language skills.
From Ms Band
On Tuesday 14th October, Years 10-13 Drama students went to see The Talented Mr Ripley at The Oxford Playhouse as part of the work required for the Live Theatre section for their written exams in GCSE and A Level.
Patricia Highsmith's psychological thriller was gripping and fantastically acted by the ensemble cast. As always, the students were exceptional ambassadors for Bartholomew School and seemed to really enjoy the play (even if it was a little long!).
We have spent the last few lessons of term re-enacting key scenes and trying out our best American accents! There will be lots for them to include in their written exam and choosing and exploring moments to write about has been fun and inciteful. A very successful trip!
From Mrs Almgill
This term’s Year 7 concert was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible musical talent and enthusiasm of our newest cohort.
The students came together creating a year group choir to give us a vibrant performance, having worked diligently in their lessons to produce a fabulous sound. Their gospel medley was uplifting, and their rendition of Wonderwall was made even more special thanks to Petru on guitar and Benji on drums, both from 7B.
We were also treated to a series of brave and brilliant solo performances, including piano, trumpet, and vocal pieces. Highlights included Jupiter from The Planets and Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain.
Parents were delighted to see how positively their children have settled into school life and were thoroughly impressed by the quality and variety of performances achieved in such a short time. It was a wonderful evening that celebrated creativity, courage, and community.
A heartfelt thank-you to FOBs for providing refreshments on the night – your support helped make the event even more enjoyable for everyone involved.
From Mrs Clements-Foster, Head of Physical Education
It's been a very busy term for our netball teams, with lots of fixtures followed by the West Oxfordshire Netball Tournament at St Helen and St Katherine School. Well done to all the girls who played so well and showed great commitment, and huge congratulations to our Year 8 tournament winners, pictured.
We hope everyone has enjoyed representing Bartholomew School and look forward to next term and all that a new round of fixtures will bring!
Look out for the new Extracurricular timetable next term and changes to the PE and Sports clubs.
From Miss Flory, Physical Education Department
This term, our School Cricket Club has been a resounding success, with around 30 students attending each week to take part in lively, inclusive sessions. With the option to play either hardball or incrediball cricket, the club offers something for everyone—regardless of age or experience. It’s been brilliant to see students from all year groups getting involved, building skills, and enjoying the game.
This thriving club wouldn’t be possible without the incredible generosity of our local cricketing community. Huge thanks go to Eynsham Cricket Club and Charlbury Cricket Club, whose volunteer coaches bring energy, expertise, and encouragement to every session. We’re also grateful to Oxfordshire Cricket for providing a dedicated coach, and to Oxford Downs Cricket Club for donating batting kit—making hardball cricket accessible to all.
If you're interested in joining, simply come along to a session or speak to Miss Flory. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned player, there's a place for you at Cricket Club!
From Mrs Humm, Head of Personal Development & Citizenship

We operate a ‘yellow bag’ scheme at Bartholomew School whereby students can help themselves to disposable menstruation pads as required. Yellow bags are located around the school site for students to help themselves and they may also go to reception or speak to another member of staff if they require more substantial supplies to have at home.
As part of this DfE funding, we are also able to offer students the chance to try out reusable period underwear.
If you have any questions about accessing menstruation products, please email Mrs Humm, Head of Learning for Life, via the School Office
Year 13 students presented their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in the final week of term, showcasing an impressive range of research and creativity. The event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their exploration of individual topics beyond the curriculum, and it was fascinating to hear them speak with such enthusiasm and confidence about their work.
A huge well done to Year 13 – you were absolutely brilliant! The feedback from staff and governors was incredibly positive, and it’s clear that our first real exam of the year was a great success. Let’s keep up the momentum, continue working hard, and aim to repeat this fantastic result next year.
We are very grateful to the staff and governors who supported the assessments, and congratulate all students on their achievements.
As part of the Year 8 Drop Down Day on Wednesday 15th October, students had a ‘Careers Detective Event’ and we were delighted to welcome representatives from a wide range of careers to assist us in school.
Students were set the challenge of working in small groups to ask the visitors questions to try to guess what their job was - against the clock! Employers were asked to bring an object with them that they rely on for their work, but ensuring it didn’t give it away too easily. This gave Year 8 students an invaluable opportunity to find out more about the range of jobs that are possible and what they might need to do to get there.
The students really enjoyed this event and we are very grateful to the employers who kindly gave up their time to support us
