Hello and welcome to my web page. I have served Barrow County Schools since 2002. Notice, I avoided telling you how long I have been an educator. I assure you that I have been an educator for a very long time.
Currently, I am the special education department chair for Apalachee High School (AHS) and a Program Specialist for Barrow County Schools. Leading the special education department is very rewarding work. It is also very hard work, but I love it. Our dedicated special education teachers and the achievement of our students make the long hours and required attention to detail worth every minute.
The special education department at AHS is growing. Increasingly, I hear of parents commending the AHS special education department for our dedication, forward thinking and genuine care for students. As a result, increasing numbers of community members choose to send their children to AHS. I consider these commendations and the trust granted our department by the community to be great honors.
For the past two years, our special education department has conducted student led IEP annual reviews using the ASPIRE model. We have found that student led IEP's help students become more responsible for their education. Research shows that student led IEP's encourage student ownership of learning and increases student engagement. We will continue this practice as the current COVID-19 crisis allows but it may be on a limited basis.
If you have any questions regarding special education, please contact me. Outside of spending time with my three grandchildren and watching UGA football, I try to make myself available to help parents and students. You are welcome to contact me anytime. I'm serious, anytime. In the mean time, I have included links below to the Barrow County Special Education Department and the Georgia Department of Education Special Education and Services Division.
Thank you for taking time to read my web page. I hope to be of service to you soon. Have a great day.
