One to World Program Research Practices

Barrington 220 has been documenting evidence of success of the One to World program since our first surveys were administered during the 2013–14 school year during the program's pilot year. The measures that best address the impact of our program are those that relate to our program’s mission and vision. The One to World mission and vision statements were revised in 2023 to align with Barrington 220's Framework 220 Strategic Plan.

Barrington 220 One to World: Our Story (2016)

A selection of the research we have conducted and published in recent years is available below (in reverse-chronological order of release).

Device Study (2021)

In June 2021, the Barrington 220 Technology & Innovation Department proposed a variety of formats for conducting a device study to the Board of Education. The Board provided their guidance on the format of the device study, and members of the department conducted research and delivered the results in December 2021.

Research Study Parameters

When this study commenced, Barrington 220 had approximately one year before a major planned device refresh; therefore, the first half of the 2021–22 school year was an ideal time to conduct a formal device study to consider new devices and/or reaffirm the iPad as our primary learning device.

This study consists of formal research, data gathering, site visits, interviews with educators at other school districts, and other sources. This report includes information about devices running Chrome OS, Windows, and Apple’s operating systems, iPadOS (iPad) and macOS (MacBook Air M1).

This report provides information and findings from data sources in the following sections:

Barrington High School Creativity Study (2018–19)

This research project began when Barrington High School was invited to take part in an Implementing Research Practices event at Apple after being recognized as an Apple Distinguished School in October 2018.

Background

Barrington 220 leaders selected a research topic, formulated a research question, and were given the opportunity to work with Dr. Damian Bebell, an Assistant Research Professor at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and a Senior Research Associate at the Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation, and Educational Policy.

Dr. Bebell has led research and evaluation studies for more than two decades investigating the effects of one-to-one technology programs and other computer-based tools on teaching and learning in a wide range of educational settings (Boston College, 2014).

This research project fits into the context of Barrington 220’s continuing One to World research that began in 2013 to evaluate and improve our district’s one-to-one program.

Learning NOW in Barrington 220 Web Series (2018–21)

Research on Barrington 220’s One to World program is not limited to studies and reports. Learning NOW in Barrington 220 is a web series that helps document and highlight learning in Barrington 220 from the student perspective. The first series of episodes relates a variety of topics in an interview format, and a series of One-Minute Spotlights take you into classrooms to show examples of how the One to World program is brought to life.

Learning NOW in Barrington 220

The original eight episodes of Learning NOW in Barrington 220 highlight learning in Barrington 220 from the student perspective in an interview format. Each episode focuses on one topic through the lens of students in elementary, middle, and high school. The series aims to create a better understanding in the Barrington community about how students learn now, and how the classroom environment has changed with the addition of a technology device in the hands of each student.

One-Minute Spotlights (2019–21)

Learning NOW in Barrington 220 returned in 2019 in a series of One-Minute Spotlights. Over 50 videos have been produced so far, and each episode is approximately one minute long highlighting some of the learning and teaching in Barrington 220 classrooms.

Student Survey & Focus Group Report, Grades 3–12 (2018–19)

At the end of the 2018–19 school year, student surveys were administered to students in Grades 3–12 about the One to World Program. Student focus groups were conducted to follow up on survey results.

Background

This research allowed us to compare some responses from previous school years. Focus Group participants ranged from Grades 3–10 in schools that serve students in Grades 3–12.

The report is comprised of three sections: Grades 3–5, Grades 6–8 (middle school), and Grades 9–12 (high school). Each section reports results from surveys and, where applicable, related information from focus groups is included. When available, survey comparisons from past years are included. In situations where previous results are related to current results, but direct comparisons are not possible, explanations and other insights are provided.

Teacher and Administrator Survey and Focus Group Report (2017)

Surveys and focus groups were administered to Barrington 220 teachers and administrators during the end of the 2016–17 school year to collect data to research the One to World program from a staff perspective.

Background

A survey was administered to all Barrington 220 teachers and administrators regarding various teaching and learning aspects of the One to World program. Survey questions were created by members of the District Technology Committee (DTC).

After survey results were compiled in February 2017, the DTC discussed the results and created a series of teacher and administrator focus group questions to further explore the information learned in the survey.

Survey and Focus Group Reports (2015–16)

During the 2015–16 school year, the Barrington 220 One to World program had completed its second full implementation year. At the time, Barrington High School students had been using 1:1 devices for two years, middle school students had been using devices for one school year, and some students in Grades Pre-Kindergarten–5 were part of a pre-launch program referred to as “LaunchPad.”

Background

This research consisted of surveys administered to LaunchPad participants in Grades 3–5 and all students in Grades 6–12. Survey questions were informed by and adapted from a survey first administered in May 2014 created by a committee of Barrington High School teachers involved in our Digital Age Learning pilot program. Questions were updated and expanded in 2016 by members of the District Technology Committee (DTC).

Focus group prompts were created by members of the DTC. Two sets of prompts were used, one for students in Grades 3–5 and another set for students in Grades 6–12. To offer additional insights, this focus group analysis also includes Barrington 220 teacher reflections that provide context to many aspects of this study.
